Add Venture in Learning ran its first course at Stover School at the end of July with ecology tutor Karen Colebourn. In a summer of very poor weather we had a perfect week and even managed to get sunburnt! Karen took students to a variety of habitats including the coastal sites of Dawlish Warren, Berry Head, and Slapton Ley.

We visited the Dartmoor and saw both the natural habitat and also the influence of man in the medieval village near Houndtor and the granite tramway and quarry at Hound Tor.

We visited the lakes and woodlands of Stover Country park and also the ancient woodland of Yarner Woods and undertook a bat survey in the grounds of the school with the Devon Bat group.

Dartmoor

In addition to Karen's guidance we had the assistance of the wardens and education officers at all the sites. It was a week packed with interest and variety maintaining the high standards set by the earlier courses run by the University of Bristol, and we look forward to building on this success.

2008 Courses

1. Life , Death and ritual on Dartmoor

31st March – 4th April
Tutor  Dr Tina Tuohy

This residential course is based at Stover School , a boarding school just outside Newton Abbot, Devon.  All students will have single rooms but they are not en suite. Some guides may need to share rooms. Students who used this venue last year were very happy with the level of comfort.
We will be visiting the  prehistoric  sites of Merrivale and Grimspound on Dartmoor, visiting Kents Cavern in Torquay where very early remains were discovered and  exploring artefacts at Torquay museum.
There will be some moorland walking but as the course is early in the season, we shall not spend the whole day outside and will be visiting reconstructions of prehistoric dwellings.
Students should be active and have warm, waterproof outdoor clothing but this course will not be an endurance test and if weather is very bad on any day we shall revert to Plan B !
Students can be met at Newton Abbot Station. Guide dogs welcome.
Fee  £350    Phone  01398  331310  ( Wendy Lunel) for information
